Hebrews 9:17 (KJV) Futility of Sacrifices: The Missing Element

Hebrews 9:16-18 (KJV)

For where a testament is, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator.
For a testament is of force after men are dead: otherwise it is of no strength at all while the testator liveth.
Whereupon neither the first testament was dedicated without blood

Here is a striking passage that indicates to us that the old covenant, the Mosaic Law, never was “of force.”  It operated under the blood of bulls and goats, but it was missing the one element that could give it life, the death of a man. It was, after all, only a picture. Every animal sacrificed was a reminder that it had no real power.

Some men got that.
Samuel offered sacrifices but he also said, 1 Samuel 15:22 (KJV)
And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.

David offered sacrifices but he also said, Psalms 40:6 (KJV)
Sacrifice and offering thou didst not desire; mine ears hast thou opened: burnt offering and sin offering hast thou not required.

With every sacrifice they offered they observed the futility of the offerings alone – they were meaningless, empty, except for what they portrayed.

Their picture was finally painted in the cross of Christ. Jesus appeared once to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.[1]The saved look for him to appear the second time[2] to finish their salvation through the redemption of their bodies.

It is for that day:

  • We look
  • We hope
  • We groan[3]

Futility of Sacrifices: The Missing Element

[1] Hebrews 9:26 (KJV)
For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.

[2] Hebrews 9:28 (KJV)
So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.

[3] Romans 8:23 (KJV)
And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body.
2 Corinthians 5:2 (KJV)
For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed upon with our house which is from heaven:
