Frowardness is in his heart, he deviseth mischief continually; he soweth discord.
Proverbs 6:16-19 (KJV)
These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him:
A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,
An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief,
A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.
I see this negative character of sowing discord not only in the same chapter of the Proverbs but in the same context.
–A naughty person soweth discord and
–God hates “he that soweth discord among brethren”
The term means something like “throwing out contention.” Ever heard someone say, “Let me throw this out there”? While that’s not always going to sow discord, that’s the gist of the term. It’s the idea of saying something to see if it gets traction.
It is significant that this is one of only a couple times the Bible says God hates, not just the sin, but the person who commits the sin. For God “love the sinner, hate the sin” does not apply to the person who sows discord among brethren.
I’d say this is a sin to stay away from.
These are sinners from whom you should also keep your distance.
