1 Peter 3:15-16 (KJV) When Faith Faces Skepticism

1 Peter 3:15-16 (KJV)

But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:
Having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evildoers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ.

I recently watched an interview conducted by Ben Shapiro with William Lane Craig.[1] It appears that Shapiro hosted the interview and was the one asking questions to Craig. Shapiro To my knowledge, has had similar interviews with other well-known Christian leaders such as Voddie Baucham and John MacArthur. During this specific interview, Craig highlights the unique characteristics of Christ and His resurrection, reinforcing his points with reliable scholarly sources that would appeal to people of intellectual curiosity, such as Shapiro. The discussion also touches on the aspect of reliability. However, Shapiro briefly shifts away from the topic, expressing his lack of interest in a conversation about the resurrection due to the anticipated disagreement with Craig. Despite this, the interview concludes amicably, with Shapiro remaining unconvinced.

  • Did Craig waste his time having the discussion with Shapiro?
  • Did he fail in his answer for his hope?
  • Why didn’t Shapiro leave the interview “ashamed?”

The answer is quite simple: the verdict is still out. When we provide a reason for our hope or encounter those who unjustly criticize our faith in Christ, their initial response may not align with our expectations. However, neither do we yet know what their final response is.

It’s possible that they may never experience a sense of shame in this earthly life, and it may seem as though they hold the upper hand. Our response might feel overlooked or unheard. Gird up the loins of your mind and remember eternity.

Regardless what happens here, the thing that matters is eternity.
