If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious.
A taste often stirs a hunger. The newborn spiritual babe has tasted the grace of God. He has experienced the hope of eternal life, the liberty of forgiven sins, and he has heard the promise of newness of life.
But his experience with grace is just begun.
The exhortation of this Word of God is, if you have indeed tasted this grace, do not be satisfied with the taste. Desire the sincere milk of the Word that you may grow thereby. He will soon exhort them to “grow in grace and in the knowledge of the Lord.”[1]
Many scholars claim there is no expression of doubt in the words “If so be.” I believe otherwise. The Word of God teaches us, warns us, that there will be false professors of our faith. There will be those who appear to have a Christian conversion, but they lack this crucial element, they never tasted grace.
Ephesians 2:8-9 (KJV)
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
Not of works, lest any man should boast.
Poor deceived souls. To have come so close to the knowledge of the truth but to have fallen short of grace.
May our Lord allow us to rescue many of them from their blindness.

[1] 2 Peter 3:18 (KJV)
But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.
