Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.
Everyone in this world has afflictions. It is a part of this life. Rich and famous, poor, and otherwise, we all are born, live and die. Some have observed that, at the moment of birth, the process of death begins. By virtue of living, we are dying. Life has many wonderful experiences, but they are pocked by times of tragedy, suffering, and hardship. People of the world have no hope but to avoid as much of it as possible.
The Christian faces all this as equally as the unsaved. God does not somehow move us out of the path all men must walk. Contrarywise, the Word of God urges us to accept a new battle, that of resisting the devil. Rather than avoiding, ignoring or denying that these afflictions exist, we are encouraged to embrace them, face them and confront them.
I don’t suppose any of us will enjoy afflictions any more than the soldier enjoys combat. But a good soldier of Jesus Christ boldly steps into the field knowing,
- He has the power of God
- He has the prayers of the believers
- He has the interest of the lost and
- He has a victorious end in view
