Thus saith the LORD, The labour of Egypt, and merchandise of Ethiopia and of the Sabeans, men of stature, shall come over unto thee, and they shall be thine: they shall come after thee; in chains they shall come over, and they shall fall down unto thee, they shall make supplication unto thee, saying, Surely God is in thee; and there is none else, there is no God.
The gist of the passage seems to be a positive one: when people of other lands come to see the God of Israel as the one and only, the true and living God.
However, the passage in previous chapters and throughout this one continues to challenge the idolator to produce a god who compares to the Almighty. Therefore, I want to entertain the notion that the phrase "there is no God" in verse fourteen and "Verily, thou art a God that hideth thyself" in verse fifteen could be spoken in mockery. Toward the end of days, just before the revelation of Jesus in His second coming, the Bible makes it clear that mockers, scoffers, unbelievers, and the like will be at an all-time high. As in the days of Noah, the imagination of the hearts of men will be only evil continually.
Two accusations against God are dominant today:
1. That there is no God
2. That, if God is, he is hidden/impotent
Even among those who come to worship the Lord, there is a lifestyle that professes one of the two. So many of those who claim to know God and believe in God act as if God does not see, cannot answer prayer, and does not care whether they trust and obey His Word. "God is" answers every objection and every question. When a person bows as if to worship but then goes on to live as they please, they have, in effect, said, "There is no God. He is hidden from us."
