Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying,
“Now, all this was done…”
Joseph Benson provides insightful instruction upon this passage, stating, “The events foretold by the prophets came to pass, not because of the prophecies which predicted them, but the prophecies predicted them because they would come to pass.”
He further explains, “God's design was the salvation of mankind, and the prophecy was fulfilled, as it were, by the way, without being primarily intended.”
Consider this: God does not need to prove Himself to us. The Word of God is for our benefit, not His. He filled the Bible with prophecies, three-quarters of which have come to pass exactly as God foretold them. He did so not just to confirm what the prophets said but because what the prophets said was truth. Jesus came to save us, and the biblical prophecies fulfilled in His birth, life, death, and resurrection reveal what God had planned before the foundation of the world.
The aim of the Bible, the fulfillment of its prophecies, and the gospel of Christ all have one end — the saving of the souls who would come to Christ in faith. “All this was done” not to prove God is right,[1] but to save God’s people from their sins.
