Behold, they say unto me, Where is the word of the LORD? let it come now.
A passage of similar sentiment is, 2 Peter 3:3-4 (KJV)
Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts,
And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they weref rom the beginning of the creation.
I read an article discussing Pascal’s Wager, dismissing it as “just silly.” The author acknowledged its frequent use by modern Christians, citing examples like, “If you don’t get saved before it’s too late, you’ll be sorry.” Pascal suggested that “individuals essentially engage in a life-defining gamble regarding belief in the existence of God.” In simpler terms, “It’s better to bet that God exists and live accordingly than to risk the consequences if He doesn’t.” While it has flaws, that's not the point of this article.
The passages I referenced above are somewhat the opposite of Pascal’s wager. These people taunt God (through the prophet) to do as He threatens, expressing disbelief that God will follow through. They either doubt God's existence, His capability, or the truth of His stated intentions.
I read about a skeptical university speaker who famously traveled the country challenging God to strike him dead. The problem with his challenge is that God didn’t say He would do that. God’s Word clearly states that the day of the Lord will come, and God declared judgment on Jerusalem, allowing Babylon to defeat them.
It would serve no purpose to gamble that God exists and live a religious life because of it. There is no promise in the Bible that God blesses people who behave as Christians. The Bible does promise forgiveness and salvation for those who believe and trust in Him. Nowhere does the Bible say that God will strike a man dead for challenging Him. Instead, it warns of impending judgment and urges us to prepare to meet God.
