The same day came to him the Sadducees, which say that there is no resurrection, and asked him,
This was a snarky question. The Sadducees, who believed there was no resurrection, asked a question they had developed to trip up people who believe in the resurrection.
Jesus’ answer was that their error resulted from not knowing the Scriptures and not understanding the power of God. Mind you, the Sadducees would have read the Scriptures and claimed faith in God.
I recently heard Richard Dawkins say that if you’ve ever read the Old Testament, you would know that the God of the Bible is a monster. Dawkins' error is twofold:
He does not know the Scriptures.
It appears he has read the Bible. I imagine he has even deeply studied the Bible. But he does not grasp the Bible. He has misinterpreted the account of the Old Testament because he studies it from the standpoint of one who believes himself to be above the God he claims does not exist.
He does not know God.
God is not the monster of the biblical narrative. The fact of the matter is, mankind is the monster. The Old Testament records wickedness of every sort committed, not by God, but by man. Man sins against God, against their country, against their leaders, against their families, against themselves. One who knows God knows Him to be busy about the business of redeeming man.
God is not a monster. God is loving, kind, gracious, and merciful. The only people who do not know that are those who refuse to see it.
The Bible honestly holds the answers. But we must not read it looking for things to accuse God or His children of. We must read it for what it is, a plan of salvation from the lost condition we all know we are in.
