But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.
A new complaint registered against the Gospels is that they were not written by the apostles at all, but by the Romans, one hundred years or more after the fact, to control the masses. I cannot see any credibility in the argument. I view it instead as part of the modern sentiment to deny and revise history to fit our preferred narrative. Knocking down Civil War statues and changing the name of the university Thomas Jefferson founded are a part of the sentiment. It’s nonsensical to rewrite history because you don’t like it.
A more common complaint is that the apostles wrote the gospels thirty or more years after the events, and their memories could have been off in that time. Ours sure would be. They cite the “contradictions” between the gospels as evidence of this and insist that, if they are unreliable, why should we trust what they say about the resurrection.
First, there are no contradictions; there are only different perspectives. Each gospel, written by a different man, offers the gospel from his unique standpoint. Each one is infallible. Together, they provide a complete account of the gospel.
Second, the complaint ignores God. These men were not relying solely on their memories; they were led by God. What they wrote was God-breathed. With God, nothing is impossible. Because God is, I can believe He gave them a supernatural sense of observation at the time of the events, as well as a supernatural ability to remember those events as they wrote them.
Those who complain that if the events were true, they would have recorded them immediately just haven’t written much. Writing is much more work and far more time-consuming than most know. God is. With God, all things are possible. Trust God.
