And Jeremiah commanded Baruch, saying, I am shut up; I cannot go into the house of the LORD:
Therefore go thou, and read in the roll, which thou hast written from my mouth, the words of the LORD in the ears of the people in the LORD'S house upon the fasting day: and also thou shalt read them in the ears of all Judah that come out of their cities.
Now, here is a common experience with man. We have a calling and duty of the Lord, but we cannot perform it. What are we to do?
God had instructed Jeremiah to write out the Word of God, to prepare, if you will, a message for the house of God. When the appointed day arrived, the Bible says Jeremiah was unable to fulfill his assignment. He was “shut up.” It simply means he was hindered from going. Various students have proposed their ideas about what might have hindered him.
· Was he incarcerated?
· Was he under the king’s orders?
· Was he ill?
His hindrance was in no way a hindrance to the Word of God. Baruch took the roll and read the book before the people.
Among the most faithful of God’s children, there are moments when we just cannot do what is our duty to do. We are not excused from the work, but we are free to pass the work (temporarily) to another. Every child of God is essential, but we are replaceable. Indeed, if the Lord tarries, we will all be replaced one day.
Fulfill your duties, call on another when you are unable, and trust God. He is the One at work in it all.
