And they feared exceedingly, and said one to another, What manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?
Our text is preceded with Mark 4:40 (KJV)
And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith?
The reason they were so fearful is that they had not yet become convinced of what manner of man Jesus is.
It’s the problem the lost have with the Bible.
How could a loving God allow such atrocities as we read in the Old Testament? They do not know what manner of man He is.
It’s the problem they have with Creation.
Is His holiness a thing to fear? Is there any way of reconciliation with Him? They do not know what manner of “man” such a powerful God is.
It’s the problem they have with sin.
How could His righteousness be better than their own? How can we trust His eternal plan of salvation? They do not know what manner of man He is.
It’s the problem they have with Biblical morality.
They are drawn to activities, thoughts, and desires that run contrary to the God of the Bible. Why should they not do as they please? They do not know what manner of man He is.
Christians, especially immature or carnal ones, tremble at the thought of surrender because they do not yet know what manner of man He is.
The better we know the Lord, what manner of man He is, the less we fear Him, the more we trust Him, and the deeper our peace will be in His presence.
