The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him.
The Lord was just about to anticipate the accusations against Him,
Ezekiel 18:25 (KJV)
Yet ye say, The way of the Lord is not equal. Hear now, O house of Israel; Is not my way equal? are not your ways unequal?
Somehow they believed that the son ought to bear the iniquity of the father.
Ezekiel 18:19 (KJV)
Yet say ye, Why? doth not the son bear the iniquity of the father? When the son hath done that which is lawful and right, andhath kept all my statutes, and hath done them, he shall surely live.
Because of God’s grace, they believed God to be unfair, unjust, evil.
I’ve witnessed this mindset in my world. More and more often people claim to not believe because they believe the God of the Bible is cruel, or evil.
· They hear that the Bible endorses slavery and they judge Him unjust.
· They hear the Bible opposes alternate lifestyles and they judge Him evil.
· They hear that the unsaved go eternally to hell and they judge God wicked.
The God of the Bible answers these questions thusly: “are not your ways unequal?” The corruption of the human nature, and who can deny that exists, causes men to see God in skewed forms. Only as we surrender to the Lord does His Holy Spirit begin to unravel our minds so that we begin to see that:
· God is not just loving but the ultimate of love.
· God is not only just but the ultimate of justice.
· God’s plan is not only good but the ultimate of goodness.
As for the father and the son, the doctrine is this, individual soul responsibility. Each one of us is free to follow the Lord or not according to the dictates of our own consciences. And in response each one of us is responsible to bear our own burden for the choices we have made.
