Luke 16:22-23 (KJV) Facing Reality

Luke 16:22-23 (KJV)

And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried;

And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.

It’s intriguing how people will deny a biblical truth simply because it is biblical. In this case God’s Word lays out for us one truth that is undeniable and unavoidable and sets beside it another truth that is less obvious but is intrinsically understood and is equally unavoidable.

·       It came to pass that the beggar died.

·       The rich man died also.

It matters not what is your station in this life, death comes upon all men. It is unavoidable. Some rich men die very young, some poor men die very old. I suspect there are things that might improve our health and the enjoyment of life while we have it, but I doubt there is anything we do that keeps one person alive longer than the next.

Death is sure and it is unavoidable.

Some people harden themselves to it like a soldier does in war. This does not make them less anxious to live if they have the chance.

Next to it Jesus, lays this - neither the beggar nor the rich man was, “dead after death.”

Though we have no way to verify it, we instinctively know it to be so. The rich man and Lazarus were both conscious; aware, they had feelings. But their conditions were entirely unique:

·       One was comforted and could not go to the place of torment.

·       The other was tormented and could not go to the place of comfort.

Jesus Christ gave us this account. Jesus is the only man to have died, been buried, and resurrected three days and night later. You can argue and disagree with what professing Christians have done over the last 2000 years if you please, but the best wisdom suggests you do not ignore what Jesus said about life, death, or salvation.
