And in the day time he was teaching in the temple; and at night he went out, and abode in the mount that is called the mount of Olives.
Jesus didn’t spend all of His ministry in and around Jerusalem, but He was there for the important events at the Temple. This passage tells us, and I think the account of Judas Iscariot knowing where to find the Lord confirms that His regular routine while in the area of Jerusalem was:
- To teach at the Temple during the day. This we see Him doing regularly.
- To abide in the event at the Mount of Olives, where He most assuredly engaged in prayer.
The two greatest needs of the people of God are to be taught God’s Word and to have a man of God pray for them. This was the great work of the apostles. They said it wasn’t reasonable for them to do anything else. It is the only work the pastor should occupy himself with. It is this work that demonstrates genuine faith in God. The work of administration, visitation, etc., tends to degenerate into faith in a system.
I know those things need to be done, but they do not need to be done by the preacher.
