And he said, I tell thee, Peter, the cock shall not crow this day, before that thou shalt thrice deny that thou knowest me.
It’s quite the contrast. Jesus had just said that these men were the one who had continued with Him in the temptations. They had made it this far. They hadn’t gone away to walk no more with Him as the multitude had done in John 6.[1]
And they were to be recognized for that.
· They would each receive a kingdom. And
· They would eat at Jesus’ table in His kingdom
Then Jesus immediately changed the subject. The temptations were not over, and these would try them as never before.
· Judas would betray Jesus
· Jesus would be caught, tried and crucified and
· Peter would deny Jesus
The chapter ends with Peter leaving the court scene weeping. He was not as strong as he believed himself to be.
None of us like going through hard times, temptations. But they do serve to prove us, test us and, if we are teachable, build us in faith.
