And he released unto them him that for sedition and murder was cast into prison, whom they had desired; but he delivered Jesus to their will.
I think we think people in authority are privileged. They make the rules. They get to do what they want. It’s a façade. It’s not true. Those in authority are often the most browbeaten of us all.
I note the three elements involved with Christ in the text.
The Jews lied about Jesus.
He had not forbidden anyone to give tribute to Caesar. He had specifically taught them, “render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s and to God the things that are God’s.”[1]
Pilate deflected.
Having heard Jesus was from Galilee, he passed Him off to Herod.
Herod mocked.
His only interest in Christ was to see a miracle.
Pilate found nothing in Christ worthy of death. He offered to allow Him to be released. The multitude, who are always the real authority—if they only knew it—caused such an uproar that Pilate, knowing Jesus was innocent, delivered Jesus to their will.
Wicked leadership realizes they are not the ultimate authority. Therefore, they manipulate the masses, seeking to discern the "will" of the multitude and providing them with what they desire in exchange for power, wealth, and other, well – who knows what else.
Good leadership would, to the best of their ability, do the right thing – regardless of the consequences.
