1 Corinthians 14:12 (KJV)
Even so ye, forasmuch as ye are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church.
The subject of speaking in tongues can be of such great controversy. My understanding of the Scriptures is that:
- Unknown tongues are the supernatural ability to speak another earthly language to accomplish an extraordinary work of evangelism.
- Ecstatic languages are prone to be demon-driven and therefore not of God.
- The gift of tongues was period-related and has now ceased.
That said, the apostle Paul’s teaching clearly indicates that, even during that period when the gift of unknown tongues was in effect, it was meant to be used “sparingly,” the ministry of prophecy, or preaching the Word of God, was the much preferred ministry, AND whatever ministry one had, the focus, goal, and main concern was the edifying of the church as a whole.
However a person chooses to understand this chapter of the Word of God, can we all at least agree that the Christian’s heartbeat ought to be the edification, the advancement, and the health of the church God has placed them in?
So what about 1 Corinthians 14:39 “… and forbid not to speak with tongues”?
I believe that to be period-specific. But I will leave that in the capable hands of individual soul liberty and the autonomy of the local church.
