2 Corinthians 8:3 To Infinity and Beyond

2 Corinthians 8:3

For to their power, I bear record, yea, and beyond their power they were willing of themselves;

 

The context of this passage, and the next chapter too, is giving. The apostle was in the middle of collecting an offering to be given to the saints of God in Jerusalem. These Gentile believers, far from being anti-Semitic, were both sympathetic and generous toward them. 

 

These two chapters are filled with practical lessons concerning stewardship, financial and otherwise. My interest in this “Visit with God” is what I’m going to call “To Infinity and Beyond.” I trust the bulk of my readers will catch the “Buzz Lightyear/Toy Story” nod. 

 

Paul said of these believers they gave “to their power.” They did everything they were capable of doing. But they did more than that. They did “beyond their power.”

 

John Gill writes this: “not that they did or could do beyond their power; but they were 'willing' beyond their power; their hearts were larger than their purses; they would gladly have done more than they had the ability to do.”

 

This is a great lesson in bountiful faith. When we are willing to do more than is in our power to do, we will almost certainly do more than we thought was in our power to do. I never want to diminish the potential for the supernatural. God is! God is more than capable of enabling us to do far beyond what is in our power. He can take our little “loaves and fishes” and feed the thousands. 

 

But He is not going to do it if we do not do what is in our power and if we are not willing to do beyond our power.
