And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
Speak unto the children of Israel, that they bring me an offering: of every man that giveth it willingly with his heart ye shall take my offering.
God told Moses to teach the people to give.
This was a freewill offering, not the tithe. A man robs God to withhold the tithe. Ten percent of our income goes to the house of God for its maintenance, upkeep, and ministries. But God told Moses to teach the people to give above that.
They were to give financially:
-Gold, silver, and brass
They were to give materially:
-Skins, wood, oil, and spices
They were to give ornamentally:
-Stones and jewels to decorate the priests’ garments
They were to give to and for the sanctuary. This was an act of worship and to enable worship. They were to give abundantly. The mercy seat, the ark, the tabernacle, the furniture, and even the priests’ clothing was to be of such a nature that they would require great expense.
They were to give though they were, at the time, on a fixed income. In the wilderness, they had only what they brought with them out of Egypt, with no hope for gain until God brought them into their Promised Land.
What a picture of cheerful giving! It’s not based on what we believe we can replace but on our faith that God has promises awaiting us.
