In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast had no pleasure.
It is evident that the people of the Old Testament understood there was no lasting value in sacrifices and offerings. David wrote in Psalms 51:16 (KJV)
For thou desirest not sacrifice; else would I give it: thou delightest not in burnt offering.
Imagine, then, centuries of gruesome and laborious sacrifices. The people offering them must have known instinctively that these could never truly take away their sins. The priests must have understood that God took no pleasure in them.
Their consciences screamed with every sacrifice; their souls yearned for something better. Their God had promised them a Lamb who would take away the sins of the world.
Oh, the futility! The frustration!
But then came the Saviour: one sacrifice for sins forever.
Religious people couldn’t move beyond the traditions, but those who came to Christ found a freedom, witnessed by the Holy Ghost, that their sins and iniquities would be remembered no more.
• Such confidence.
• Such boldness.
These believers, yoked together in the assembly of the local church, could never, even under pain of death. return to useless religious tradition.
