And I saw another mighty angel come down from heaven, clothed with a cloud: and a rainbow was upon his head, and his face was as it were the sun, and his feet as pillars of fire:
This angel is distinct from the seven angels with the seven trumpets. John describes him as “another mighty angel,” emphasizing his unique role and characteristics. He is clothed in splendor, with a cloud as his garment, a rainbow encircling his head, a face radiant like the sun, and feet resembling pillars of fire.
His actions also reveal his divine authority. He places one foot on the sea and the other on the earth (verse 2), signifying his dominion over all creation. In verse 6, he raises his hand to heaven and declares that time shall be no longer, demonstrating his authority to proclaim the fulfillment of God’s plan.
John Gill identifies this angel as “the uncreated angel of the Lord,” a reference to Christ himself. Gill explains:
“…he is sometimes called an Angel simply, Gen 48:16; sometimes the Angel of the Lord, and who appears to be Jehovah himself, the second Person, Gen 16:7, compared with Gen 19:1; and sometimes the Angel of God’s presence, Isa 63:9; and the Angel of the great council in the Septuagint on Isa 9:6; and the Angel, or messenger, of the covenant, Mal 3:1; and may be so called, because he is a messenger from God as man and Mediator, being sent by him to declare his will and redeem his people…”
This angel is none other than Jesus Christ. As the Word made flesh, he upholds all things by the Word of his power. At the appointed time, he will raise his hand to heaven and declare that God’s plan for this earth is complete.
