These are the two olive trees, and the two candlesticks standing before the God of the earth.
This passage hearkens back to Zechariah 4:2-3 (KJV):
And said unto me, What seest thou? And I said, I have looked, and behold a candlestick all of gold, with a bowl upon the top of it, and his seven lamps thereon, and seven pipes to the seven lamps, which are upon the top thereof:
And two olive trees by it, one upon the right side of the bowl, and the other upon the left side thereof.
Prophetical subjects are always open to some speculation. There are differing opinions about who the two witnesses of Revelation are. I believe they are Moses and Elijah because the miracles they perform are similar to those done by Moses and Elijah. Some believe they are Enoch and Elijah because they are the only two prophets of the Old Testament who went to heaven without dying. It is appointed unto man once to die, and some Bible students suggest this account in Revelation is “their turn.” Ultimately, I figure we’ll know these things when we get to heaven. I also figure we’ll spend all of eternity learning from the Bible at the feet of the Lord—discovering things we never could have seen clearly while bound by the limitations of our flesh.
John Gill suggests the olive trees in Zechariah represent Zerubbabel and Joshua, who rebuilt the Temple after Judah’s return from captivity. The candlestick in the Temple lit the holy place, symbolizing the Word of God, which is a lamp unto our feet, and the Holy Spirit, who teaches us the Word. The witnesses in Revelation serve God to convict men of righteousness and to restore true worship as revealed in the Word of God.
Revelation is future. It is literal. It will happen exactly as described in the Word of God.
However, we need some old-fashioned olive trees and candlesticks in our world today: Christians committed to living for God, worshiping Him, and preaching the truth of God exactly as it is recorded in His Word.
