And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind.
My understanding of the various judgments in the Revelation—the seals, the trumpets, the plagues, and the vials—is that they run concurrently. I view them like the old transparencies we used on overhead projectors: each layer adding more detail. Or like multiple-color printing, where each color is laid on top of the other until the final image is complete. I see the seventh of each judgment as the return of Christ at the end of the seven-year tribulation.
The sixth seal judgment describes the most intense part of that future tribulation. The earth shakes, the sun scorches, and the stars fall from the sky. It reads like the stuff of science fiction—asteroids on a collision course with earth, and some hero astronaut ready to sacrifice his life to save the planet. But in Revelation, there is no hero. Instead, “the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains.” They recognize the real threat is not the asteroid—it is the God they have offended. Yet they still refuse to repent and be made right with Him.
I’m especially struck by the phrase “untimely figs.” Barnes’ Notes explains: “This word properly denotes ‘winter-figs,’ or such as grow under the leaves and do not ripen at the proper season, but hang upon the trees during the winter. This fruit seldom matures, and easily falls off in the spring of the year. A violent wind shaking a plantation of fig-trees would of course cast many such figs to the ground.”
Let me be clear—I believe everything in this section of Revelation is literal, future, and certain to happen. Christians will have been raptured to glory before the tribulation begins. If you are saved, you will see these events from heaven’s perspective, but you will not endure them. If you are not saved when that time begins, there will be no opportunity to come to Christ in the tribulation.
I borrow the term “untimely figs” here to describe those who hide under the leaves of religion. They may attend church, thinking it will save them. They may trust their morality or boast that they’ve “kept the Ten Commandments.” But like winter figs, they are unripe, unsaved, and holding on to false hope. When the storms of life come, they fall from the tree of eternal life—because Christ alone saves.
Could you be an “untimely fig”? Is your confidence in religion, or in Christ? Don’t trust in church membership or outward morality. Place your faith in Jesus Christ alone, while there is still hope.

Unshaken Truth: When the Stars Fall and the Figs Fail
✨ The Bible makes it clear—only Christ can save. Religion, morality, or good works will never be enough. Revelation 6:13 warns us that the “untimely figs” will fall when judgment comes. Don’t wait until it’s too late.
