Numbers 13:16 (KJV)
These are the names of the men which Moses sent to spy out the land. And Moses called Oshea the son of Nun Jehoshua.
- Oshea means salvation.
- Jehoshua means Jehovah is salvation.
- Joshua is an abbreviation of Jehoshua.
Brown Driver Briggs notes that Oshea was his family name. Interestingly, the New Testament equivalent is Jesus. Joshua was not a pre-incarnate version of Christ, but he does remind me that, as a Christian, my name, my reputation, and my testimony in this world are reflections of my Saviour—and ought to reflect Him well.
I’ve known many men named Joshua, or Josh (which isn’t much different from the shift between Jehoshua and Joshua). I have a grandson named Joshua. Some of them are godly men, others are not.
I’ve known many more people who claim to be Christians. Some are godly. Unfortunately, too many are not.

✨ Your name, your reputation, and your testimony all say something about who you really follow. Joshua’s name was changed to remind Israel that Jehovah is salvation. As Christians, our lives should do the same—point clearly to Christ.
