He doth execute the judgment of the fatherless and widow, and loveth the stranger, in giving him food and raiment.
Almost anyone familiar with the Bible knows the Greek word for love, agape. Though there are other Greek words translated “love,” and even multiple forms of agape—including one that was never seen in Greek writing before Christianity—most of us have heard that agape love is choosing to give to another. Agape is selflessness.
Here we see an example of that same love in action by our Heavenly Father. Only this time, it is expressed in a Hebrew word—ahab. Strong’s Concordance defines it as “to have affection.” The Ancient Hebrew Pictograph represents a person looking at a house with his hands raised, as if to say, “Behold!” This dictionary goes on to say, “These pictures mean ‘look toward the house’ or ‘provide for the family.’”
But in this case, our Heavenly Father isn’t looking at Israel, whom He had chosen (v. 15). He’s looking at the fatherless, the widow, and the stranger.
Then we see love in action, demonstrated for us by none other than our own Heavenly Father—“in giving them food and raiment.”
This is love in real life: to see the worth of another and to purposefully, selflessly provide for them.
- Not just your family
- Not just those who have shown love to you
- Not just those who have the means to return what you give
To imitate the love of God is to look out upon others—to bless them and to care for them.
