Matthew 18:10 (KJV)
Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, That in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven.
Recently, a popular man among conservatives, and especially among Christians, was publicly assassinated. Immediately, representations of him entering into heaven began to appear, many of them depicting him as having grown wings.
My understanding of the perception of those in heaven having wings is that it comes from Catholic teaching, with the idea that when believers reach heaven we become angels. Perhaps that idea springs from verses such as this.
No doubt it’s a complicated passage and one that’s challenging to be too dogmatic over, but it does not look to me like Jesus is calling children angels. Rather, it seems that these children and I would say all people possess angels who minister in the presence of God. Some would call them guardian angels.
Whether each of us possesses a particular angel assigned just to us, or whether there are angels assigned to regions of the world, or even to various people groups, is not a debate I wish to enter. I see from Scripture:
- Angels are real.
- Angels are a separate creation from men.
- Angels are ministering spirits.
- Angels minister before God.
- Angels minister on behalf of God.
- Angels minister to men.
I am convinced they have ministered to me—sometimes in ways I became quite aware of, but most of the time in ways that were imperceptible.
I never want to take that for granted, but I always want to praise and worship God rather than them.
