Revelation 20:4 (KJV) Blessed Before His Throne

Revelation 20:4 (KJV)

And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.

I view John as representative of the church-age believer. The Lord is showing him things that must shortly come to pass, though they have not yet happened. That is what we experience when we read the Revelation—we are peering into the future. We do not fully understand it; many events and images are beyond our ability to conceive. Yet we believe it to be true, and we are certain of its coming.

At this point John declares, “And I saw thrones….” He looks into the future and sees what we sometimes call “the consummation of all things.” The plan of God is about to be completed. What we have read of, preached about, longed for, and hoped for is just about to happen.

“And I saw thrones…” Men make much of their own authority. They manipulate, force, coerce, and impose their wills upon others. They connive and contrive, they plot and plan, seeking to rule the affairs of life.

But God sets up and casts down authority. One day, it will shortly come to pass that the only throne that matters is the one He sits upon.

Blessed are those who have bowed only before His throne.
