Deuteronomy 18:22 (KJV) The Bible, Not Opinion

Deuteronomy 18:22 (KJV)

When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him.

I realize that just about any application of Scripture may be challenged. We can all find holes in the lessons someone else gives from God’s Word. I think God did it like that on purpose, so none of us think too highly of ourselves and so each of us has some freedom to seek God according to the dictates of personal conscience.

I see the priests of the Old Testament not as representing the ministry of the New Testament, but as representing believers. Christ has made us to be kings and priests. I believe it is priests today and kings in the millennial kingdom. I see the prophets of the Old Testament as more representative of the preachers of our time. They were called out of any tribe. They may or may not have had education, royal heritage, or blood in the priesthood. God called them as He would, where He would, and used them as He would. The key was that God called them. He gave them His message, and it was authoritative. If a prophet spoke and people rejected the message, it was on them!

The question was: how could the people know the prophet’s message was from God? God answered this. The prophet God called would have an error-free message. It would follow; it would come to pass. The prophet whose message did not follow was to be considered presumptuous.

Fast forward to the New Testament. Today we have a test much more reliable. We have the Bible. The preacher today is not a foreteller but a forth-teller. He proclaims the Bible, the Word of God. It is true that we cannot proclaim it perfectly—we are but human. But we must take care that what we proclaim is the Word of God.

I see a lot of presumption in many modern ministers. There’s a whole lot of “educated opinion.” It’s not the preaching of the Word of God, but the dissemination of books, the wisdom of men based on experience, or something else altogether. Modern pastors often presume that because of their position they have the right to reinvent what they were taught, to tweak what they heard from the preachers of the past to fit the culture of their day. Whether it’s their stance on the infallibility of the Bible, the historicity of the Resurrection, or the acceptance of moral standards, they presume to know something other than the Word of God.

Presumptuous preachers.

None of us are perfect. But you can know whether a preacher is presumptuous or not. Just check the Word of God. Find a preacher who sticks closely to the Bible, who sees it as his final and only authority.

Listen to that preacher.
