And thine eye shall not pity; but life shall go for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot.
There is only one way to put away evil from among us—and that is to have no pity. Soft, effeminate, ungodly thinking has caused our culture to pity almost everyone, resulting in very little correction and, consequently, an explosion of violence.
I recently read that the governor of our state paroled a serial rapist early, claiming there is “no evidence he will offend again.” It’s pitiful that they’re so pitiful.
On the other hand, this Old Testament text teaches more than civil lessons. On a personal level, there is only one way to deal with our own sin—have no pity. Mortify the deeds of the flesh!
But the ultimate lesson of the passage is found in our Saviour. God the Father showed no pity for our sin when He saved us. Jesus took upon Himself our sin:
- Life for life.
- Eye for eye.
- Tooth for tooth.
- Hand for hand.
- Foot for foot.
Jesus “became sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him.” (2 Corinthians 5:21)
In that moment, God forsook His only begotten Son and turned His back upon Him. The sun turned black. The merciless whims of the Sanhedrin and the feckless leadership of Rome were given their way. No pity was shown to the spotless Lamb of God—“so shalt thou put the evil away from among you.”
Romans 6:23
For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
