Yet there shall be a space between you and it, about two thousand cubits by measure: come not near unto it, that ye may know the way by which ye must go: for ye have not passed this way heretofore.
Passing over Jordan is definitely the theme of this chapter. It’s often viewed as a type of passing from this life into eternity. I believe it more accurately pictures passing from salvation into the surrendered Christian life.
Many professing believers never really cross over into that life. They prefer instead to wander aimlessly—almost uselessly—through their years.
- On the other side are giants.
- On the other side are walled cities.
- On the other side are battles.
Those exist in the wilderness too, but on the other side we enter into a life of purpose—one that intentionally faces those oppositions.
- On the other side are victories.
- On the other side are fields of harvest.
- On the other side are adventures of faith.
I note several truths concerning their crossing:
There was a time of lodging before they passed over.
It wasn’t wandering; it was preparation. They stayed three days before crossing.
They followed the Ark when they passed over.
The distance, I believe, gave visibility. Too close, and not everyone could have seen the Ark. They had never passed this way before, and they needed God’s clear guidance.
They passed over on dry ground.
God worked a miracle so they could pass clean over Jordan. The Lord performs so many miraculous things for those who follow Him that we sometimes take them for granted.
They passed over right against Jericho.
The first hurdle faced them the moment they arrived on the other side. The surrendered Christian life was never meant to be one of ease.

You’ve Never Been This Way Before: The Other Side of Surrender
🚶♂️ Have you crossed your Jordan yet?
Many believers stay in the wilderness—saved but never surrendered. Crossing the Jordan means stepping into a life of purpose, obedience, and victory through Christ. Just like Israel, God calls you to move forward in faith, even when the way is unfamiliar.
