And Joshua the son of Nun sent out of Shittim two men to spy secretly, saying, Go view the land, even Jericho. And they went, and came into an harlot's house, named Rahab, and lodged there.
The Bible is quite clear concerning Rahab’s sin, and I would be loath to attempt to excuse it. It seems that many commentaries want to excuse the spies for lodging there — perhaps they didn’t know who she was until later, and so forth. Yet it’s likely Rahab was one of the few who would have provided them lodging.
I do not wish to excuse her sin, but I do want to point out a kind of virtue seldom associated with women of her sort — at least as much as I’ve heard.
She had a house.
It wasn’t a motel room or some dingy dive. It was on the wall, with access to the roof. It was hers.
She had stalks of flax.
One of the definitions of the ancient Hebrew word for harlot relates to harvesting food. Rahab had food stored in her home.
She had laid it in order.
It wasn’t scattered about or unkept. It was organized, managed, and maintained.
She was aware of the spiritual condition of her city and of the news about Israel.
She was alert, educated, and humble about these things.
She was in contact with her parents and siblings, and she cared deeply for their well-being.
And finally, she was good for her word.
Rahab took a significant risk in hiding the spies and misleading the king’s men — yet she kept her promise, even at great personal danger.
I say again, there is no excuse for her sin. The Bible doesn’t cover it up, whitewash it, or ignore it — and neither should we. But Rahab had character. That character led her out of her life of sin and eventually placed her in the very lineage of Christ.
No matter our past, there is a path to Jesus Christ. It is available and open to all.
People of character and faith will find it.
