Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father's house:
Do people in hell pray?
It seems clear to me that the conditions in hell have shifted somewhat since the account Jesus gives here. After the resurrection of Jesus Christ, Abraham’s bosom—the place of rest for the righteous—was emptied. Those saints were brought into the presence of God in heaven. The Bible says:
Isaiah 5:14 (KJV)
Therefore hell hath enlarged herself, and opened her mouth without measure: and their glory, and their multitude, and their pomp, and he that rejoiceth, shall descend into it.
Hell enlarged itself because the righteous were removed from that former compartment.
I mention this only to point out that those in hell today no longer have the opportunity to “lift up his eyes… and seeth Abraham afar off.” But even so, Jesus’ account gives us a glimpse of what hell is really like.
- It is a place of torment.
- It is a place of flames.
- It is a place of consciousness.
And for this rich man, it was a place where—realizing his eternal condition—he prayed.
I don’t want to be dogmatic beyond what Scripture states, but I do believe we can safely say this: hell is no place of riotous party. It is not a reunion of unbelieving friends or a place of reckless indulgence. It is a place of suffering, torment, and eternal regret.
And if those in hell pray, they pray that their lost loved ones on earth would never come to that place of torment.
