So likewise ye, when ye shall have done all those things which are commanded you, say, We are unprofitable servants: we have done that which was our duty to do.
Such soft service.
There’s no question this lesson is a hard one to swallow. We like soft service. We like entitled wages. We like short weeks and high pay. We like long weekends, extended vacations, and quiet evenings.
But for much of human history, that has simply not been the reality. Life is hard. It’s been harder.
Jesus used the reality of His day to teach us a valuable truth about faith. We do not deserve the grace God pours out on us. This lesson isn’t saying God is like that kind of master—far from it! His goodness toward us is overwhelming. He blesses us in ways we could never repay. Given our bent toward sin, His absolute perfection, and the high cost of our salvation, we truly are unprofitable servants. The very best among us still fall short of His glory. And it does us good to spend some time thinking on that.
There is work to be done. Honestly, I don’t think we are working hard enough, long enough, or Spirit-filled enough these days.
We’ve enjoyed such soft service for a few decades now. Maybe it’s time we step up, accept our duty, and put in some hard labor for Christ in these final days.

📖 Tired of the soft version of Christianity?
Jesus called us to humble, committed service — not comfort without cost. Luke 17:10 reminds us that we’re unprofitable servants, blessed far beyond what we deserve. If you’re ready to dig deeper into what true discipleship looks like, now’s a good time to take that step.
