Luke 22:2 (KJV) The Devil’s “Yes”

Luke 22:2 (KJV)

And the chief priests and scribes sought how they might kill him; for they feared the people.

It occurs to me that everything following this passage is the answer to their quest. Since this was the religious institution of Israel, might we say all that follows was the answer to their prayers?

  • They found one to betray Jesus.
  • They were able to capture and contain Him.
  • They found witnesses against Him.
  • They believed they had heard Him speak blasphemy with His own mouth.
  • They convinced Pilate to permit His execution.
  • Indeed, they saw Christ die, just as they had wished.

Their “prayers” were answered.

But notice Luke 22:3 (KJV):
Then entered Satan into Judas surnamed Iscariot, being of the number of the twelve.

It was Satan who answered them.

They didn’t know that. Nor would they have admitted it if told. But it was the devil who answered their prayers.

I understand that there are many religions in the world that I would call false, in error, unbiblical—and most of them can give accounts of miracles, answered prayers, and amazing events among their followers. I think sometimes even Christians exaggerate circumstances and call them answers to prayer when they may simply be the result of hard work, compassion, and persistence.

Sometimes God’s grace falls upon them—just as it does the rain, on the just and on the unjust. But I will not deny that sometimes the unexplainable happens, even among those in false religions. Their prayers are answered. I’m just saying those prayers might not have been answered by the God of Heaven.

They wouldn’t know it. They would argue against it if it were suggested. But I’m saying it’s the devil—the prince of the power of the air, Satan himself—who answers the prayers of those who follow a faith opposed to the Bible.

Satan cannot ultimately harm the plan of God. And God, as He did in the case of Christ’s betrayal, can turn it all for His glory. But it was the devil who answered the prayers of those who opposed Him.

The Devil’s “Yes”: Prayers Heard—but by Whom?

πŸ“– Not every answered prayer comes from God. The chief priests thought their prayers were answered when Jesus was crucified—but it was Satan at work behind the scenes (Luke 22:2–3). The devil still deceives through false religion and counterfeit blessings today.
