Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away.
The context is the end of the days of earth — the time when the temple will be destroyed and the Son of Man will return to establish His kingdom. The passage is filled with “frightening things”:
- Wars and commotions
- Nations against nations
- Earthquakes, famines, pestilences, and fearful sights
There will be persecutions, imprisonments, betrayals, and executions.
(It’s noteworthy, isn’t it, that Jesus says some will be put to death but none will perish?)
- Jerusalem will be surrounded by armies.
- There will be signs in the heavens.
- There will be distress and perplexity among nations.
Some students of the Bible (I believe they are wrong) believe all this happened in A.D. 70, when the Romans leveled Jerusalem. It wouldn’t be impossible to imagine many of these frightening things repeating multiple times over the last two millennia. The Holocaust comes to mind. Applying it to Christian history, we might think of the Dark Ages or the terrible conflicts between Protestants and Catholics in England — think “Bloody Mary.”
What is unique in our day is that we hear of all these things worldwide and in real time. In the past, people only knew what was happening in their small corner of the world. Today, we hear of everything, everywhere, as it happens. We even have the “privilege” of watching it unfold.
I do not know that “our redemption draweth nigh.” I cannot — and would not — attempt to say that these are the exact days Jesus predicted. But I will say this: every Word of the Lord will come to pass exactly as He said it would.
So let us take heed, prepare spiritually, and remain mindful — not only of these words, but of all His words.
