Mark 6:1 (KJV) What Does It Really Mean to Be a Disciple?

Mark 6:1 (KJV)

And he went out from thence, and came into his own country; and his disciples follow him.

Now here is a curious thing. Notice that the passage is in the past tense, but the word follow is in the present tense, often called the historical present. The KJV translators preserved that feature instead of smoothing it into the past tense.

The historical present serves several purposes.

  • It makes the narrative more vivid and immediate.
  • It draws the reader into the scene as though it is unfolding before them.
  • It often highlights an action the writer wants the reader to notice.

So there is a subtle emphasis in the KJV.

  • "His disciples followed him" simply reports what happened.
  • "His disciples follow him" pictures them actively accompanying Him as the story unfolds.

The KJV frequently preserves this Greek literary feature, especially in the Gospels, where the narrative often shifts into the historical present for emphasis.

As I read this verse, I cannot help but think of it as a definition of a disciple: "His disciples follow Him."

  • They follow Him into His own country.
  • They follow Him into the wilderness.
  • They follow Him across dark valleys.
  • They follow Him up high mountains.
  • They follow Him through fire and flood.
  • They follow Him in life and in death.

A disciple follows Jesus whether he is called to stay where he is or to go to the most difficult mission field.

The disciple does not choose the destination.

His disciples follow Him.
