How then can man be justified with God? or how can he be clean that is born of a woman?

Bildad, the speaker in this chapter, is the “Protestant,” the traditionalist. He is rigid and firm. He sees God as unloving and harsh. He believes that the only way a man may possibly have a chance in the presence of God is through the strict practice of rules, rituals, and regulations. The task of the faith, in his mind, is to force a man to live righteously.

For Bildad, the question, “How then can man be justified with God?” is answered, “He cannot.”

Bildad is wrong.

His question is not a bad one. I would even say it is the most important question in all the world.

“How CAN a man be justified with God?”

The Bible has the answer:

Through Jesus Christ.

Man cannot make himself clean. Religion cannot make him clean. Rules, rituals, and regulations cannot make him clean.

But Jesus Christ can.

We don’t need to force religion on unwilling subjects.

We don’t need to throw up our hands in frustration at those who won’t comply.

We have but one responsibility in this regard:

• Preach Jesus Christ.
• Preach the cross.
• Preach the grace of God that saves and thus justifies all who come to Him.
