Job 9:16 (KJV)
If I had called, and he had answered me; yet would I not believe that he had hearkened unto my voice.
Gill writes of this:
“Job was a praying person; he had often prayed to God in his closet, and in his family, for himself, and for his children, and for his friends. He had found God to be a God hearing and answering prayer, but seems to question whether he would answer him now, if he did pray to him…”
I am not one to question the translators in their use of italicized words as a means of not adding to Scripture. They make it clear that the italicized words are not in the original text but are intended to aid in a clearer understanding of the passage. However, I do almost always read passages containing italicized words at least once without them.
In this case, though I do not think the italicized word changes the meaning of the text, it might make the verse a little more difficult to get. I do not believe, as Gill suggested, that Job—a praying man—was questioning whether God would answer.
I think Job was insisting on exactly the opposite. I believe he was saying something to this effect: "If I had called and He had answered me, why would I not believe that He had hearkened unto my voice?”
It is often the case that I misplace an item and have trouble finding it because I have a picture in my mind of where it should be or what I expect to see. Only when I stop looking for the picture in my mind and actually look for the item itself am I able to find it—often right in front of me, though not at all where I expected it to be.
Sometimes answers to prayer seem obscured, not because God failed to answer, but because we were looking for a different answer.
Job was not only a man of prayer but also a man of faith. He believed God had heard him, even when the answer to his prayer did not look the way he—or apparently everyone else—expected it would.
