Job 33:23-24 (KJV)
If there be a messenger with him, an interpreter, one among a thousand, to shew unto man his uprightness:
Then he is gracious unto him, and saith, Deliver him from going down to the pit: I have found a ransom.
God’s grace is available to men through “a ransom.”
Strong’s defines the word as “a sum of money, a satisfaction.” But before that, he takes us back to the ancient Hebrew idea of “a covering.”
This is none other than Christ.
Those who come to Christ are justified, not by their own deeds, but because they are covered, hidden in the righteousness of Jesus Christ.
Notice the other descriptions surrounding this ransom.
A Messenger
The word describes a messenger or representative. Another term might be ambassador or deputy.
I am thankful that God gives us messengers, men of God whose calling it is to speak God’s Word and walk this path of faith beside us.
But more so, I am thankful this is the ministry of Jesus Christ.
He came to live among us. He walked with us. Now He ever liveth to intercede for us and to plead our cause before His Father.
An Interpreter
The Hebrew word describes one who interprets or speaks on behalf of another.
Consider Jesus, who came to make the Father known to us. He was tempted in all points as we are, yet without sin. Through Him, all who call upon the Lord are made just before God.
He does not merely tell us what is wrong. He provides the answer to our sin.
One Among a Thousand
This means someone exceptional, unlike the others.
Jesus made Himself a man, but He is so much more than a man.
He is God in the flesh.
God eternal.
God who came among us, whom men could see, touch, hear, and know.
There is none like Him.
To Shew Unto Man His Uprightness
He shows us the righteousness of God, and He shows us the way to righteousness with God.
We cannot make ourselves righteous. We cannot pay the debt of our own sin.
But Jesus Christ has provided what we could never provide for ourselves.
Seeing there is Christ, there is a ransom.
There is a covering.
There is satisfaction before God for our sin.
And because there is a ransom, God can graciously say,
“Deliver him from going down to the pit: I have found a ransom.”

One Among a Thousand: The Ransom That Saves
