And they worshipped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy:
And were continually in the temple, praising and blessing God. Amen.
The emotions of this chapter are all over the map—as one would expect them to be. Grief, perplexity, fear, amazement, sadness, disappointment, confusion, unbelief, curiosity, longing, spiritual fervency, excitement, terror, troubled hearts, joy mixed with disbelief, wonder, worship, and great joy.
The emotional movement of the chapter could be summarized in five stages:
- Sorrow — They believed Jesus was dead.
- Confusion — They could not understand what had happened.
- Stirring — Their hearts burned as Jesus opened the Scriptures.
- Joy — They realized their Saviour was alive.
- Worship — They returned to Jerusalem praising God.
Who would have thought, on that morning when they went to the tomb, that they would experience the wonder and joy they knew by the end of the chapter?
I hesitate to “carnalize” the experience of the resurrection, but I do want to make note that terrible grief seldom lasts too long. This is especially true when one knows the Lord and looks to Him. Weeping may endure for the night, but joy does come in the morning.
It is possible—and I think the warning needs to be given—to remain in despair. But it is a choice a person makes, either by refusing to accept God’s comfort or by refusing to follow God’s path.
Those who know the Lord, love the Lord, and follow the Lord will discover that the Lord’s path leads back to joy.
