Psalms 31:5 (KJV)
Into thine hand I commit my spirit: thou hast redeemed me, O LORD God of truth.
This passage is spoken by the Lord on the cross. It is at least hinted at by Stephen at his stoning, and Paul used a similar phrase to speak of committing his eternal life to Christ. These are comforting words to those whose time on earth draws near to a close.
It is believed that David wrote these words during one of the many times Saul had him trapped and his life was in peril. Let us suppose the Psalm is prophetic of Christ. I see in the Psalm a before, during, and after the cross progression:
Before the cross (verses 1–8) — THE SAVIOUR’S CONFIDENCE
During the cross (verses 9–18) — THE SAVIOUR’S SUFFERING
After the cross (verses 19–24) — THE SAVIOUR’S VICTORY
While I understand that there is a real-life scenario playing out for David, that there is an application for the believer in distress, and that one would be foolish to attempt to press Christ into every verse as a direct prophecy, still I find in Christ light for the path leading to trials, strength for the days in the trials, and hope for victory from the trials of this life.

Confidence, Suffering, and Victory: Before, During, and After Calvary
