A Psalm of David. The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?
Indulge an old man once again. I’m going to share a recollection rather than a Bible lesson, though I believe such recollections to be valuable for future readers as well as Bible studies. These sorts of recollections demonstrate that the Word of God is not academic but practical.
I began as a pastor in Astoria, OR, in 1984. Though I had served in other churches and had helped plant a new church in Platteville, CO, this was my first experience on my own. I knew door-knocking was the most useful means of meeting new people, introducing myself, and informing others of the church plant. It is inexpensive, constant (if one keeps at it), and fast (if one keeps at it). It is biblical, at least according to one interpretation of Acts 20:20. But it is also terrifying. One never knows who he might encounter.
I set out by myself to go door to door, house to house, and meet people in Astoria. Oh, the experiences!
It took a great deal of fortitude to keep up this work. One morning, in my personal time with the Lord, I fell upon this verse. May I tell you, it has been my driving motto for door-to-door evangelism ever since! I walk up to every home quoting, “The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?”
I’m still afraid. But that passage gets me to the front step every time.
