Psalms 28:1 (KJV) The Pit Cannot Claim Us

Psalms 28:1 (KJV)

A Psalm of David. Unto thee will I cry, O LORD my rock; be not silent to me: lest, if thou be silent to me, I become like them that go down into the pit.

John Gill describes the concept of the pit in five increasingly severe conditions:

  • A Ditch — A man falls into a ditch, cannot climb out, and has no one to rescue him.
  • A Battlefield Pit — A soldier dies in battle and is thrown into a common burial pit.
  • The Forgotten Dead — A person dies and is no longer regarded or remembered.
  • The Grave — David fears being killed by his enemies and buried in the pit of corruption.
  • The Pit of Hell — A condition of utter distress and despair from which there is no deliverance.

I would have immediately thought of the pit as hell, but there are other levels of despair.

Here's the key: the believer may be “like” them that go down into the pit, but they are not of them that do so.

The reason? Because God isn't silent to us.

Think of it.

  • We can pray and know He hears.
  • We have the ever-present witness of the Holy Spirit.
  • We have friends and brethren who may remind us of God's Word.
  • We have our church faithfully preaching the Word of God.
  • We have a pastor called by God to pray for us and teach us God's Word.

And if that weren't sufficient, we have the opportunity to own, carry, read, delight in, and meditate upon His Word day and night.

We may, from time to time, find ourselves away from God, but that's of our own doing.

God isn't silent, so we can always climb out of the pit and need never fear the pit of hell.
