Romans 2:4 KJV
Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and
forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth
thee to repentance?
The Jews had misunderstood these gracious attributes of God as proof
that God did not condemn, indeed, did not consider their unbiblical actions as
sinful. They looked for God to be harsh against evil and, if He was not, then
in their minds it was evil that was misunderstood and not God.
Christians in
America have adopted that same mentality concerning sin that, if they can get
away with it, it must not be bad. It has led to:
- Sexual promiscuity
- Unwanted pregnancy and abortion
- Approval of homosexuality
- Drinking by Christians
- Condoning of every sort of ill behavior by professing Christians
But it is a
misunderstanding the of nature God and not the nature of sin that
is the root of the problem. Sin is sin even when God is long suffering
concerning it.
- Abortions may happen without God raining fire
- Homosexuality may be legalized without God overthrowing the
government and
- Personal sins may be committed without God throwing a lightening
bolt at us
But sin is still
sin and sinners ought to repent.
A more accurate
understanding of both God and the nature of sin would be to see God's
- Goodness
- Forbearance and
- Longsuffering
as an opportunity
to repent and; repent therefore.
