Galatians 5:14 (KJV)
For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
- The Mosaic Law contains more than 600 regulations
- The Ten Commandments are composed of, you guessed it, Ten Commandments
- Jesus boiled them all into two greatest commandments
- The Word of God here refines it to just one
Of course these narrower lists do not negate those previous. The broader list is contained within the narrower. For instance to fulfill the one law of Galatians five presupposes obedience to the first of two commandments given by our Lord Jesus Christ.
The nature of the faith is to concentrate truth to its basic core. We don’t intend to make things more difficult but to make the burden lighter. Wasn’t this the concern of the church in Acts fifteen?
Contrast this to:
- the labor of the Jewish rabbis,
- the rituals of the Roman Catholic Church or
- the legislative work of the U.S. government
The laws in the United States just in the tax code number into the thousands and, it is admitted by those who work those codes, impossible to decipher consistently.
We don’t need to load people down with Christian rules and regulations. We just need to encourage them to love God with all their heart and soul. God will take care of all the rest.
