Hebrews 5:1-2 (KJV)
For every high priest taken from among men is ordained for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins:Who can have compassion on the ignorant, and on them that are out of the way; for that he himself also is compassed with infirmity.

The priest has compassion and ministers to two sorts of people:
The ignorantThese are souls who do not know better. Whether it is because of background, upbringing or their own negligence they haven’t yet heard the Word of God clearly preached. The Old Testament provided a sacrifice for the sin of ignorance.
Them that are out of the wayI take this to be those who should know better and have chosen to step away from the teaching of God’s Word. It is willful sin.
Either way the priest could have compassion and thus minister on their behalf.
This has not changed today. We have people who despise the truth and haven’t even heard that truth, yet we have others who know full well what the message from God they are breaking is.
The difference is that the new High Priest, Jesus Christ, is free to address and minister to the needs of all because he has no need to concern himself with His own sins.
He has none.
