Hebrews 4:8 (KJV)
For if Jesus had given them rest, then would he not afterward have spoken of another day.
For if Jesus had given them rest, then would he not afterward have spoken of another day.
If in fact the promise of God was fulfilled through Christ and the Law, there would have been no need for a new day. If God’s promises were sufficiently met in the Sabbath and those rituals directly and indirectly associated with it in the Mosaic Law, then the Bible could have easily ended with Israel crossing into the Promised Land. There would have been no need for most of the prophetic work of Isaiah, or David’s work in the Psalms.
The prophecies of Daniel, Malachi and Micah would be rendered practically useless, save for their historical value, if after the Law we had only to wait for Christ.
The reason there are further prophecies speaking of a new covenant and another day is precisely because the Mosaic Law is not sufficient of itself. Yea, the Law is not the end of the plan of God but only a step toward it. Christ did more than perfectly obey the Law.
- He fulfilled and finished it.
- He nailed it to His Cross.
- He ushered in a new covenant with a new fellowship and a new day.
We gather on Sundays to commemorate that those old things have passed away and God has given us something new.
