James 5:3 (KJV)
Your gold and silver is cankered; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days.

Neither gold nor silver can rust, but they can become tarnished. Cankering would most likely happen when placed in contact with other forms of metal and allowed to sit together in a moist environment. Under these conditions electrolysis can eat away at the metals.
In the one case this pictures wealth not being used.Money is of no use unless it is circulated. Even our money, deposited for safe keeping in a federally insured bank, doesn’t sit in a vault. The bank lets it out on interest.
God gives to us so that what we have may be used. To hoard it (keep back an inordinate amount) for the sake of having is a useless practice.
In the second case the wealth is at work but in the wrong environment.Christians have little business lending our resources for that, which builds only wood, hay and stubble.
The corruption of our resources in either idleness or inappropriate investments will serve as a witness against us in the eternal judgment seat of Christ.
All our goods ought to be used as God alone has ordained.
