Revelation 20:1-2 (KJV)
And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years,
And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years,
I am reminded of Jude 1:9
Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee.
Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee.
In ages, previous to the Tribulation, even the archangel would not contend with Satan in his own power. Here we are, in this text, at the end of the Tribulation and an angel “laid hold” of the devil.
Satan is a powerful enemy today but his power only exists because it serves a greater purpose and God temporarily allows it. In time his authority and power will be so removed that an angel, not the archangel, lays hold of him to cast him into the pit.
Satan is a reality and believers ought to resist him. But Christians need not dread contending with him so long as we are in the power of the Lord.
He only has the strength that God allows.
